I don't know. If this is the same person who tried to sell them for $1M instead of $100,000, I doubt they were doing this to allow the free circulation of Dead shows.

In any case, they are circulating now for free. Why not give the reels back and let the engineers clean up the existing copies and sell them to fans willing to shell out a few bucks for improved copies. If a fan doesn't have a 5/8/77 Cornell soundboard by now, they never will...

No, different guy. The Betty Boards were auctioned off in several random batches, bought by different people. We have yet to hear more than a couple tapes from the batch of the guy who wanted a million (and those only because Rob Eaton stealth-copied them).
Whoever got this 5/8/77 etc. batch was clearly one of the good guys, given that all these shows were promptly put out in pristine copies.
Whatever their reasons are for not donating the masters back to the Vault, who knows, but maybe they don't believe in commercial releases...lots of deadheads are like that.

I'm confused as to how the Dancin' from 5/8/77 has been released with the Beyond Description box set, yet this show is not in the vault. Did they simply just release a "cleaned up" the Betty Board?

I assume they bent their "masters-only" rule for that since it was a bonus track. But there have certainly been other times when they've said X show isn't in the vault, and then some of it turns up on a release later on.

Lifted this from a poster on Dead.net

This guy may just be the tape hoarder...

See the connections from the GD New Yorker article...

Looks like he's broke on the verge of foreclosure(as of July 2012). If this is actually the guy, I don't know if we'll ever see these tapes. They may be too degraded anyway...
